Prof. Mitali Wong

Dr. Mitali P.Wong is a tenured Professor of English at Claflin University, Orangeburg, South Carolina. She received her terminal degree in English from the University of Manitoba in Canada. She received the James E. Hunter Award for Excellence in Teaching at Claflin University in 2001. In 2012 and 2013, she received a Humanities Initiatives Award from the National Endowment for Humanities for $99,992 for curriculum development and research on Classical and Contemporary Literature from South Asia. In 2013-2014, she worked with the University of Calcutta for Claflin University's partnership award with the US-India 21st Century Knowledge Initiative for $250,000 approximately. In 2015, she was a recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award from South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, a regional consortium.

In addition to several articles, Mitali Wong has published Politics and Tropes in Renaissance History Plays (2006). She is the first author of The Fiction of South Asians in North America and the Caribbean (2004) co-authored by Zia Hasan. She has published The English-Language Poetry of South Asians: The Colonial Era tothe Present (2013). She is currently co-authoring Sri Lankans' Views on English in the Colonial and Post-Colonial Eras with Dr. Subathini Ramesh, a professor of Linguistics at the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The contract for this book has been signed with Cambridge Scholars, U.K.

Another book in progress is a collection of critical essays on contemporary South Asian poetry co-edited by Dr. Waqas Khwaja, a professor of English at Agnes Scott College in GA. Mitali Wong teaches courses in World Literature, Shakespeare, Literary Criticism or critical theory, Gender Studies, and of course, first-year English. She currently serves as the Interim Chairperson for English at Claflin University.

Mitali Wong was born in India and became a naturalized citizen of the United States. She is originally from Kolkata and earned her B.A. in English (Honors) in the first class from Lady Brabourne College (University of Calcutta). Mitali Wong is the wife of Dr. Eugene F. Wong, and the mother of Dr. Paramita Pati and Mrs. Sumitra Pati-Thieker.
